How are the bowls made?
Volunteers roll out 6” or 9” rounds of clay.
Volunteers take the rounds of clay to various schools for the children to emboss or press their design into the round of clay. Then the round is draped over a metal bowl to form the clay bowl. The child then marks the underside of the clay bowl with their name and classroom designation.
The soft clay bowls are set to dry and then fired at 1600 degrees for their first (bisque) firing.
Volunteers then bring the ‘bisqued’ fired bowls back to their respective students. The students apply glaze (color) to their bowls. The bowls are again fired for a second time.
The finished bowls are presented at the Empty Bowls Fall Community event where they can be viewed and purchased by the students, parents or community members. Bowls are also presented at the school’s art night. Students or parents who purchase a big bowl receive a voucher to attend the October event.
The big bowls are $20 and the small bowls are $10.
